They Sprout When You Least Expect Them

THING ONE:

I had a birthday the other day (I try to keep it to one a year). Early in the day I ran out to do a few errands in town and I popped by the post office to check my box.

Setting up a PO box was a good decision. It’s been a source of joy and little surprises. There are letters from young readers, but also, sometimes, heartfelt notes from parents, educators, librarians, and booksellers. These are the unexpected encouragements—the little reminders that my stories really *are* being read out there in the Big World.

When I checked my box on my birthday there was a key. A key! A key means there’s something in the package locker (I have a Very Little Box). Inside the package Locker I found a box that looked like this:

And inside the box was a note that said “Happy Birthday!”

And there was this:

A perfectly sculpted little onion head from Mighty Jack.

So thank you, dear reader, for making my day.

THING TWO

I’ve been in one of my Very Circus-y Moods of late—practicing some of the old tricks and sketching ideas for small scale stage shows and just generally thinking in terms of calliope music and tattered finery. In the midst of these revelries I stumbled on this video of David Dimitri’s One man Circus and I think it’s absolutely charming:

Wishing you a day of subtle surprises.

Fan Art: Move Over Captain America...

...and make way for CAPITAN ITALIA.

Today is Angelica's 11th birthday, so I made this little fan art of her character, Capitan Italia. I still don't know what her chicken is called.

OH AND REMEMBER: Tomorrow is the big cover reveal for Zita 3! Plus the publication date and links for pre-orders! Keep an eye on the internets! EDIT: (Specifically keep an eye on Boing Boing).

Rogue and Gambit

I made this little commission for a very special seamstress. I don’t do barters very often, but she’s been wanting a picture of her two favorite mutants for awhile now and I had been searching for a gypsy corset for Anna. So we worked out a trade.

Here’s Anna wearing the (fantastic) results:

And an action shot!:

By the way, I posted this image to my Tumblr yesterday and within a couple hours it became the most shared of all my tumblr pictures. Those X-Men! So popular on tumblr, it’s ...UNCANNY! I took some minor liberties with one of Rogue's more current costumes, giving her open patches on her shoulders in place of X-logos. I figured anyone who sneaks up to grab her by the shoulders deserves to get their powers drained. Gambit, who's always had a problematic outfit, I decided to keep casual.

Parents

This was my warm up sketch for the day. Astute observers might have guessed that it is my mom’s birthday! Hooray for astute observers! Hooray for my mom!

My parents are definitely the biggest reason I’ve ended up being able to do creative work full time. Whenever I wanted to make some invention, or art project or costume they were always happy to make time, help me dig around for supplies or help out with the parts of the project I wasn’t able to do. They took my crazy ideas seriously. And oh the things my mom was willing to sew...!

I dressed up as an eyeball one Halloween. A plucked-out eyeball. Like with nerve endings and everything. This is the kind of costume my mom would help sew. No questions asked. (I could do a whole post about the eyeball costume highlighting my dad’s genius at helping design this kind of thing).

I wore a home-made leather He-Man baldric that my mom sewed for a couple YEARS, even after a gym coach asked my parents if it was a pacemaker under my shirt. My parents just said “oh, he just wears a He-Man suit under his clothes.”

So, yeah. Hooray for cool moms.

A Prime Number

Oh, Bruce, you kidder.

Well today I’m 33 years old! Some other notably cool artists have celebrated their 33rd in the past couple weeks including Jake Parker, Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier. GO TEAM 33!

And, to nab an idea from Jake’s blog: if you’ve been quietly following this blog for a time, feel free to break the silence and drop a note in the comments box! I’m curious about who’s reading (I know my mom's reading!). And if you have a site of your own and want to do something really special, consider putting up a link to this blog.
