Dragon Mania continues at the Hatke house as we creep further into Winter.
Lately I’ve been taking little Zita to her weekly dance class. The dance class is in the same building that houses a little main street coffee shop so I’ve been using the dance class as an opportunity to get in a little quality sketchbook time. For the artist, sketching is like sleep. It’s one of those things that recharges you but is also tempting to skimp on. Of course, like sleep, if you skimp too much your work start to suffer for it.
And now, good news for everyone who ordered Waiting for Toast: The books have arrived, the watercolors are piling up and I’ll start sending out books on Friday!
I ordered extra books so if you still want a copy order this week or next and it’ll be there in plenty of time for Christmas.
Here's a link to the BOOKSHOP.

Bellissimi!!!
Such an excellent way of putting it! One more level of Super Mario Brothers can get in the way of both. Ha-ha-ha! Looking forward to the new book.
ANNA! Arrivati i libri ieri! Grazie, grazie tante volte! Molto, molto bella e meraviglioso! Brava, Anna.
And Jeff, yes. I fear video games because of that! I sleep little enough as it is.
Very nice. I can't wait to be surprised by which watercolor I get.
Wonderful watercolor dragons! I'd love to see one in my copy of the book...
those are awesome! hey, Finn loves turtles. and dragons. could i request a couple for him? reimbursement shall be forthcoming. and so shall we, in a couple of weeks!
Oh, will we be seeing you soon? That's good news.
As for the dragons, I have one left. I might make a couple more but...
I also might be able to do you one better. I like them as a set and have been thinking of printing them as a set of memory game cards. Each set would have two copies of the original five wizards, 15 dragons and a princess.

oh wow. that would be awesome. all of those things are in high standing at our house.
one query: what about the prince?
I tried making a knight, but he didn't seem to fit somehow. It's the only one I threw away.
I'll try again maybe.
I was thinking instead of a knight you should do a squire boy, a page boy, or even a stable boy ala The Princess Bride's Wesley but then thought maybe a juggling or fire breathing court jester would be more appropriate for an original Hatke.
I like the yellow dragon with the smoke best---reminds me of a painting of Smaug by John Howe. :)
I got Waiting for Toast today. Thank you very much Ben, the water color and the sketch are great, just like the rest of your book.
Awww, sad that I've missed out on this round! Your dragons are perfectly distilled to the best parts.
I'm glad to hear the books are arriving!
I'm working on making the dragons (and wizards) into a set called "Memory Dragon" and i'll post about that soon. I'm going to try to have at least a few copies for sale. They al ended up looking good as a set.
Oh and there is one princess card.
More about this soon!
I just got mine but haven't opened it yet as I'm waiting for a lull in the nightly activities in order to appreciate it better.
I would definitely buy decks of Memory Dragon for gifts, etc.
I just wanted to give you a peek at where some of your art ends up. I have Zita the Spacegirl on my desk at work. I am an engine designer in a very large and conservative company. Your novel warns people that I might not always be so serious. I love your character's courage and gumption. I even borrow it at times. Thanks! Zita
Aw, thanks Zita!
